October 16-18th 2009
175 Miles in 3 days, from Irish Sea to North Sea!

2009 was the first time we'd cycled this route, and what a time of year to pick! However, the weather surprised everyone and apart from a couple of little showers it stayed mainly dry and often sunny!

At the start of October we took a team of intermediate cyclists on one of the most famous cycling routes in the country, the C2C Hadrian's Wall route from Ravenglass to Tynemouth. We did it to raise money for the Parkinson's Disease Society. The Parkinson's Disease Society is the leading charity dedicated to supporting all people with Parkinson's, their families, friends and carers. • We left Xscape Castleford at 8.30pm on Thursday evening in early October by Rock Tour Bus so that we could get to the start point at Ravenglass in time for a nights sleep before we had to start cycling!

  • We started early on the Friday morning with a traditional dip of the back wheels in the Irish sea, and then headed to Silloth, a little over 53 miles away, where we stayed for the night in the tour bus. The sight of Silloth was a welcome relief for the riders!

  • Saturday morning arrived and we all set off for Haltwhistle some 64 miles away. This was the toughest day of the 3 as we cycled up some pretty steep climbs including the Banks and Greenhead. We stopped for numerous photo opportunities..

  • After another nights sleep we set off for Tynemouth, approximately 57 miles away. After the previous evening's descent into the South Tyne valley at Haltwhistle, the route undulated to Bardon Mill where it climbed steadily up the north flank of the South Tyne valley to a summit at Smith's Shield before a thrilling descent to Vindolanda, which was paid for by a very stiff climb up to the highest summit of Hadrian's Cycleway at Crindledykes - 256 metres above sea level. The last 23 miles were a nice gradual downhill run to the coast where we dipped our front wheels into the North Sea before we rushed to the nearest fish and chip shop!!
