Well it's all over for another year!
We took
a 60-strong novice ladies team to Amsterdam and back and, once again, didn't
lose any of them along the way!
After the
extraordinary 2008 event when we managed to raise over £38,000 and attracted
over a dozen corporate sponsors we were hoping to make the 2010 all-female event
just as good, if not better, and it was! The money is still being counted and
collected but we're on target to raise another massive amount of cash for the
charity.
- On Friday
11th June we set off from York to Hull, some 60 miles away where
our overnight ferry to Rotterdam awaited. We stopped for
a pub buffet lunch in Market Weighton. Once we arrived at the docks we checked-in,
found our rooms, had a quick shower and got changed ready to go to the all-you-can-eat
buffet for some food before we headed to the entertainment lounge to
make fools of ourselves on the dancefloor!
-
We woke up on Saturday to find ourselves in
beautiful Holland, where cyclists are treated like gods and car drivers actually
give way to you no matter what! We rode up through the countryside, stopped for
a quick lunch and a paddle in the sea at the beautiful beach resort at Katwijk
and then set off onwards to Amsterdam where we stayed in a fabulous hostel near the city centre so that the more curious of the riders could explore!
-
On Sunday the riders
had the
whole day to themselves to explore the magnificant city of Amsterdam. They
visited the musuems, took a canal trip, found a nice spot for some lunch (packup
was
provided by the hostel!), had a few drinks
in the multitude of bars and then ventured into the back streets on the evening!!
- Monday
morning saw the start of one of the most scenic days of the entire trip as we headed back to Rotterdam through the centre of Holland stopping for lunch by the
lake at Valkensburg Meer. The riders were amazed at the Windmills
and canals as we passed through small towns and large cities before arriving back
at the Ferry in time for our return journey. Once again, we got
to eat,
drink and boogie the
night away, then collapsed in a heap with a beer in one hand and a plastic windmill
in the other before being gently rocked to sleep in our cabins!
-
Finally we arrived back in the UK on Tuesday with
an easy ride back to York and the finish line! We stopped again at a pub for a buffet lunch
before completing this amazing ride. We laughed at the people who swore that we
wouldn't be able to make it and beamed at the awaiting family members and
friends! We all made
some great friends on this fantastic trip!!!
The route was mainly traffic
free - we trundled through countryside, amazing views and some fabulous
towns and cities in Holland. This ride
is suitable for riders of all levels. We only rode at the speed of the slowest
rider so no-one had anything to worry about! We gave helping hands when required
and as much encouragement as we thought was needed!

Inntravel, sponsors of the ‘Amsterdame 2010’ cycle ride, are a specialist holiday company based near Castle Howard in rural North Yorkshire who have been offering gently active holidays to Europe for over 25 years. Inntravel provide a wide choice of self-guided walking and cycling holidays, and believe that the best way to get to know a region is ‘up close’, at your own pace, so that you can experience an area as the locals see it.
Steve Jack, Inntravel’s Marketing Manager, says: “We are very supportive of cycling as an enjoyable, healthy and environmentally friendly way to explore the countryside, and our sponsorship of the Charity Adventure ride is an ideal way for us to demonstrate this commitment. The link with the Marie Curie charity, plus the willingness of Charity Adventure’s organisers and participants to give up their own time and money in such a venture, makes it doubly worthwhile, and we are delighted to be able to lend our support.”
Inntravel has several keen cyclists among its staff (two of whom will be participating in the Amsterdame ride itself!), and offers over 40 different cycling holidays to Europe’s most alluring and unspoiled corners. Whether you wish to meander along the country lanes of Menorca, explore the beautiful hill-top towns of Tuscany, delight in the colour and charm of Holland, immerse yourself in the tranquillity of rural France, or discover the dramatic landscapes of Slovenia, Inntravel can provide the perfect holiday on two wheels. Accommodation is at personally selected and highly individual hotels, and you can expect to enjoy tasty dinners of regional cooking along the way - accompanied, of course, by delicious local wines. With detailed route notes and maps provided, and your luggage transported between hotels, all you have to do is pedal along and enjoy the scenery!
